About Groundcovers & Low Growing Plants

Groundcovers are low growing plants that quickly will cover the ground and form a thick blanket. They spread by underground stems, or aboveground stems. Once you have established groundcover, maintenance is fairly minimal.

Groundcovers can be used in many places such as shaded areas where grass cannot grow, under trees to cover tree roots, to prevent soil erosion, on steep slopes where mowing can be hazardous and in rock gardens.

Before selecting your groundcover be sure to inspect your planting area.: Is the soil dry or moist, does the area receive a lot of sun or mostly shade? Don’t forget to check your Hardiness Zone, you want to make sure that your groundcover will survive in the climate that you live in.

It is best to plant groundcover in the spring or early summer. This will give the plant enough time to become established before winter.
