Compost Problems
Here are some common compost problems and suggestions on how to fix them.
Compost not heating up:
- You may not have enough moisture in your compost. Add water and turn pile.
- You may not have enough air circulating in your pile. Turn pile.
- Your compost pile may be too small. Add to pile
- May not have enough Nitrogen. Add “Greens”- grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps.
Compost pile smells bad:
- Your pile may have too much moisture. Turn your pile and add dry material (sawdust, wood chips straw).
- Your pile could be too packed down. Turn pile to loosen up.
Ammonia smell:
- May not have enough Carbon. Add “Browns” – (straw, dead leaves, sawdust, wood chips).
Compost pile too hot:
- Your pile may be too large. Make your pile smaller.
- Your pile may not have enough air circulation. Turn pile.
Pest problems:
- You may have the wrong waste in your compost. Remove any meat, dairy products, fish bones, and fats from pile.
